Caring for Your Baby in the Sun and Heat
by BabyGanics™

Summer is a wonderful time of year. Families take the time off and enjoy themselves at the beach, amusement park or possibly summer camp. It is also a time to be extra careful, as it important to keep an infant safe and comfortable.   The heat of summer could cause not only discomfort, but may also put your child at risk of dehydration, heatstroke or sunburn. We at BabyGanics recognize the fact that ensuring your baby’s safety does not end with non toxic cleaning and the use of baby safe natural cleaners and eco cleaning products. This is why we’re also giving you advice on how you can care for your little ones this summer. To make sure your child stays cool and protected during the long, hot days of summer, check out our advice.
Protecting your child from the heat

  • Babies can suffer from dehydration if they do not get enough breast milk, infant formula or water to drink. Always consult your pediatrician if you fear there is a danger of dehydration, especially if your baby is already suffering from vomiting or diarrhea. Indications of dehydration may include irritability, lethargy, sunken eyes and fontanel (the soft spot on the front of the head in babies), and dry skin. It is important to bring your baby to a doctor if you suspect dehydration.
  • To avoid overheating, it may help to bathe your baby during a hot day. Lukewarm water will suffice; never bathe your baby using cold water.
  • When inside the house, dress your baby in breathable clothes and always put them in a cool, comfortable part of the house. Keep the room temperature between 75-78 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • It is best to keep your baby inside the house during very hot days. When traveling, make sure your baby is always under shade and protected from the sun. Never leave a baby alone in the car and make sure your car has an effective air conditioning system and window shades.

Protecting your baby from the sun

  • Babies can also suffer from heatstroke, and are one of the more susceptible groups due to their small body surface area.  The body normally generates heat as a result of metabolism, and is usually able to dissipate the heat by either radiation of heat through the skin or by evaporation of sweat.  However, in extreme heat and high humidity, the body may not be able to dissipate the heat and the body temperature rises, sometimes to 106 degrees.   Unable to contain increasing body temperature by sweating alone, a person suffering from heatstroke can subsequently suffer damage to their internal organs. Symptoms may include headache, sluggishness, seizure, hot skin (but not sweaty), high body temperature, loss of consciousness, rapid heart rate, dizziness, as well as disorientation or confusion. It is very important to bring a baby or any person suffering from heat stroke to the hospital immediately. Nevertheless, you should familiarize yourself with the first aid treatments you can give to the person before medical help is made available. Get the person indoors or away from the sun and remove clothing so you could sponge down his or her body with cool water. Fan the person to stimulate sweating and have him or her lie down with feet slightly raised.
  • Babies less than 1 year of age should be protected from direct sunlight. Always protect him or her with breathable clothing with a tight weave. Protect your baby’s face and head with a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Your child may also suffer from sunburn if his or her skin is exposed to the sun. Even when you are staying under a shade, you might still want to consider using baby safe sunscreen because UV rays can bounce off from reflective surfaces to where your baby is staying. Choose sunscreens rated SPF 30 or higher, and are free from chemicals such as oxybenzone, phthalates, and nanoparticles.

By following these extra precautions, you and your baby can enjoy summer more and worry less about the sun and heat!
