You may not notice it, but your child is probably growing up very, very fast. One moment, he’s still sleeping quietly in his crib and then the next moment, he’s running all over the place. Needless to say, letting your child explore his environment is a very effective way of teaching him how to be independent. Nevertheless, as a parent, it is still important that you also define some boundaries without necessarily being too authoritarian.
For example, you have to make sure that after exploring stuff, your kid washes his hands properly. And it is always best to teach your kid to clean up with organic, natural and safe cleaning products.
Between ages one and three years, children begin walking, talking, running and asserting their independence. Parent-supervised exploration is a very effective way to help build up not only a child’s physical development as he becomes more active, but also his emotional quotient and his social skills.
Make sure to always heed your child’s promptings for help. He might need assistance like when he wants to procure some materials for his activity. After providing him with what he needs and wants, however, it would be helpful if you step back just a little. You don’t have to intervene all of the time unless your child is doing something that is potentially harmful to himself or to other people.
Remember that if your child does something unsafe, unhygienic or damaging – stealing a knife from the kitchen, eating glue, painting the wall, or picking up a dead bird in the park, for instance, gently but firmly tell your child that there are right ways to explore things. Instead of scolding your child, be as positive as you can: “knives are for big people, but children’s stuff, like these coloring pens, are much nicer,” or “it’s much better to paint on paper so you can keep it in your album.” The idea is to react only as appropriately as the situation calls for. If ever your child becomes stubborn, you can try distracting him and channeling his curiosity to another activity.
Teach your child proper hygiene so that he learns how to clean up after every activity. Tell him about the importance of handwashing especially after holding something dirty.
