You don’t have to wait for your children to start asking about global warming and what recycling is before you teach them how to help save the environment. Kids nowadays are naturally curious and the moment they start showing interest in the world they live in, they can already learn about the importance of using natural products from you.
Probably the easiest way to teach your children to be earth-friendly is to have them help you do your grocery shopping. On the weekends when you check out your list of things to do, you could go to the fresh produce section and choose fruits and vegetables which are eco-friendly and pesticide-free. When choosing processed foods like milk or bottled drinks, make sure to read the labels and weed out those that have artificial colors or artificial flavors. Also check the manufacturing and expiration date when purchasing food in bulk. Children like to buy processed food because of their colorful packaging. Let them enjoy these every now and then, but whenever possible, teach them to buy everything fresh, natural and from a reliable source. Candies and junk food need not be bad for your kids, just make sure that what you buy is certified-organic. By teaching them to read the labels well they become smart and discriminating consumers.
Letting your kids express themselves through clothes and toys is part of their mental development so make sure that they pick out only those that are non-toxic and hypo-allergenic. Certain paints contain lead, which is poisonous, and other substances that can cause illness. Whenever possible, it is best to use materials made of natural plant fibers like cotton for clothes, and biodegradable or reusable materials for their toys, and from companies known to use renewable sources of energy. This way they not only learn to have fun, they also start to develop concern for the environment.
As early as now, it would be best to teach your children how to clean. They should always wash their hands before meals and learn to help wash the dishes too using soap or an eco-friendly household solution. You can also teach them how to segregate waste by making this into a fun game for the family. Give familiar examples and let them identify materials that are biodegradable or non-biodegradable, recyclable, reusable, and if a process is energy-efficient. Inform them that choosing natural products that leave minimal carbon footprint is better for the environment because it means less greenhouse gases were released in its production.
By the time your kids start asking you what these greenhouse gases are and how they specifically affect global warming, you’d be happy to tell them that’s what school is for.
