Is Organic Cotton the Best Material for My Child’s Clothes?

Organically-produced foods are big these days. With increasing awareness among consumers about the dangers of agrochemicals being used in our farms, there’s no wonder more and more people are saying “no” to veggies, fruits and grains that are laden with toxins. Now, supporters of green and organic living are fighting on another front—our cotton fields.

Well, these people aren’t waging a battle against the gigantic cotton industry for nothing. If your idyllic image of cotton fields are the kind you see on TV where people gambol around acres of ripe fluffy cotton bolls while draped in white towels, then you’re gonna be disappointed. The pesticides used in conventional cotton farming account for about 16 percent of the total used for crops in the whole world. That is easily the largest share of pesticides being used for any crop produced! These pesticides pollute the air we breathe as well as our water sources. Its residues can also pose some serious health risks to the end consumers of cotton products. Did you know that 5 of the 9 most popular pesticides used in California contain ingredients that are known carcinogens?

When you are guided by information such as these, it will be easy to see how organic cotton is indeed one of the best materials that can ever be used to make your baby’s clothes. But aside from the obvious benefit of your child not being exposed to harmful chemicals, organic cotton farming has even more advantages.

Farming cotton organically helps improve the quality of life among the farming communities in developing countries. Driven by the greed to maximize their profits, cotton producers often sacrifice the health of their workers by using these harmful chemicals. Debilitated by toxins, the children of the workers are forced to take their parents’ place in their stead, proliferating child labor. By using organic farming methods, such human rights abuses are reduced.

When cotton producers farm cotton organically, they also help advance earth-friendly technologies. For example, farmers are beginning to use composting instead of introducing synthetic fertilizers into their farms. Using compost helps maintain the natural “health” of the earth used for farming. As a method of pest control, they are also now exploring the use of beneficial predators like birds and insects to combat the growth of pest populations, rendering harmful chemical pesticides useless.

By advocating green and eco-friendly technologies to provide for our needs, we not only protect our health, we also help save the Earth. In your homes, you can abide by the same principle by using safe, effective and natural cleaning solutions like those made by BabyGanics.
